Our Vision

It all begins with an idea…

but meaningful research begins with people

The North East and Cumbria Parkinson’s Research Interest Group (NEC-RIG) exists to bring together people living with Parkinson’s, their partners, family members, friends and carers with clinicians and researchers across our region.

Our Aim

At NEC-RIG, we believe Parkinson’s research is strongest when it is shaped by the people it matters to most.

Our aim is to increase awareness and understanding of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) — ensuring that people living with Parkinson’s, along with their partners, families, friends and carers, are meaningfully involved in research, not just as participants but as partners.

We work to promote Parkinson’s research opportunities across the North East and Cumbria, and to ensure that research in our region reflects the real experiences, priorities and needs of our community.

By bringing people together, we can help shape research that is relevant, inclusive and impactful.

What do we aim to do?

  • Promote Parkinson’s research — from early design and development through to participation

  • Share updates on recent research findings in an accessible way

  • Encourage collaboration between people affected by Parkinson’s, clinicians and researchers

  • Hold regular meetings and events

  • Provide information about ongoing research and opportunities to get involved

By working together, we can strengthen Parkinson’s research in our region and ensure it reflects the needs, experiences and priorities of our community.
